The Coplay Cement Company Kilns. Today, known as the Saylor Park Industrial Museum, named after David Saylor, the father of the American Portland cement industry. This site is registered with the United States National Register of Historic Places. The Coplay Cement Company was responsible for over 70% of the Portland cement manufactured by 1900.
These vertical kilns, also known as Schoefer kilns, only ran for a short time, from 1893 to 1904, when they were replaced with more efficient rotary kilns. The kilns were originally housed in a building, but are now surrounded by fencing to keep visitors safe from the visibly weathered structure. Layers of brick have fallen from the exterior and plants have taken root on other parts.
